CAdMO – Computer Aided digital Music Orchestra

DIGI ORCHESTRA is a kind of instrument intended for the soloist to replace the live orchestra. Thanks to the use of software and a pilot-musician who controls it, the solution is able to effectively accompany the student in learning and concert performance. In other words, it is a digital tool that will allow the soloist to have a virtual orchestra, but focused on individual interpretation and tailored to the needs of the performer. CAdMO is a project by Fondazione Accademia di Musica with Marco Robino.

In my view, CAdMO is a remarkably well-crafted educational tool. Shaping my own interpretation of Beethoven’s Third Symphony in collaboration with a multi-talented figure such as Marco Robino – a composer, solo cellist and chamber musician – and with the assistance of Andrea Mancini, acting as sound engineer and designer, was a unique and extremely formative experience. The high level of sound fidelity achieved during the public performance is also remarkable, thanks to the chosen system of recording individual tracks in the studio and playing them back through a number of high-quality speakers. I was keen to present this project at the ‘D. Cimarosa’ Conservatoire in Avellino as well, where it was very well received, with the active participation of students and teachers. I believe, in fact, that the adoption of such software, combined with the training of ‘conductors’ capable of using the system, could prove to be a valid alternative or addition to the experience that the soloist gains with the accompanying pianist, establishing —both during practice and, where applicable, during lessons with the teacher—a relationship with a real conductor, who in turn must manage —in terms of intensity and tempo—an orchestral sound mass, with all its natural possibilities and limitations.Pier Carmine Garzillo (Piano teacher at the State Conservatoire of Music “Domenico Cimarosa” at Avellino)

Playing alongside CAdMO was a wonderful and rewarding experience. I believe this project gives the Music Academy a sense of modernity and relevance, both in technological and musical terms. It’s a huge help when it comes to learning the instrument and offers a fresh perspective on how to play, as well as on how to approach future performances. A great experience!David Mendieta (violinist, student with Francesco Manara)

My experience with CAdMO was truly wonderful. I had a brilliant time, and it was fascinating not only to play, but also to see and experience the work from the other side, looking after the orchestra and the organisation. It was a very educational and inspiring experience.Francesca Barbato (pianist, student with Gabriele Carcano)

I was convinced that I would have to play and test CAdMO as a pianist, so I had only considered the ‘solo’ aspect of the project. Instead, I discovered so much more. I was lucky enough to play on the finished product, experiencing its great versatility, usefulness and efficiency, and this was extremely educational. But I also greatly appreciated the chance to learn how to use the programme, to understand where it all began and how it was conceived. Then, actually stepping over to the other side and taking the reins of the orchestra was, for me as a pianist, truly enlightening. Playing and studying after all this has been (and will be) different. I really thank you for giving me this opportunity and, if I may, I’d also like to thank Marco and Andrea very much. They were wonderful and incredibly helpful. I sincerely hope to have more opportunities for growth like this“. Elena Pierini (pianist, student with Gabriele Carcano)
