Hanwen Feng is a cellist from Qiqihar, China. She began studying the cello in 2012 and has since gained extensive performance experience across China, the UK, and the Europe.
A scholarship recipient at the Royal Northern College of Music, Hanwen recently completed her master’s degree (2023–2025) with Distinction Award, studying with Cecilia Radic, Edvard Pogossian, and Gillian Thoday. Prior to that, she earned her undergraduate degree at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where she studied under Associate Professor Xiaoqi Sun.
Hanwen has studied with renowned cellists and educators including Michel Strauss, Ludwig Quandt, Liwei Qin, Kun Hu, and Hanxiang Gong. She has also participated in masterclasses with Leonard Elschenbroich, Natalie Clein, Alban Gerhardt, Hannah Roberts, Adrian Mantu, among others.
In 2019, Hanwen was invited by the Shougang Olympic Games Organizing Committee to serve as principal cellist for a commemorative video marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, recorded with the CCOM internal orchestra. In 2020, she gave a solo recital in her hometown of Qiqihar. In March 2023, she was invited to perform on Music Open Class, a televised programme on China Central Television (CCTV) led by Professor Lei Fan, the clarinet professor at CCOM. Her performances have taken her to numerous cities across China, including Beijing, Tianjin, Chengdu, Hohhot, Shenyang, Changchun, Fuzhou, Xiamen, and Nanchang, etc.
In 2024, Hanwen had the privilege of being one of eight international student artists at the Cellissimo Festival, Music for Galway, in Ireland. She took part in masterclasses with celebrated cellists including Natalie Clein, Alban Gerhardt, Adrian Mantu, etc, and had the memorable opportunity to perform with Nicolas Altstaedt in the Cellissimo Spectacular.
In 2025, she was selected for Black Lives in Music’s Recruiting Classical programme, which placed me on the extra list of eight leading UK orchestras, including the London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, Hallé, and RSNO.
Hanwen has been a student of the Fondazione Accademia di Musica in Pinerolo since 2026 and under the guidance of Maestro Patrick Demenga.
